University Hospital “St. George” – Plovdiv City
Today’s University Hospital “St. George” has more than century-old tradition. It is the successor of the revealed immediately after the liberation in 1879 Red Cross’s Hospital “St. Panteleimon” – the first large hospital in southern Bulgaria. It has a permission for medical activity from January 2001.
It is situated on two bases – Base 1 therapeutic clinics – V. Aprilov 15A Boulevard. and Base 2 surgical unit – Peshtersko shose 66 Buld., between which there is 24-hour transport links for movement of patients and physicians consultants.
In relation to the performance of national tasks in emergency care the hospital has been recognized as the main service center of emergency patients from the city and the whole area of southern Bulgaria. University Hospital “St. George” is the first hospital certified to the ISO 9001: 2000 in 2008.
The hemodialysis Department was established in 1974. It is located in Base 1 of the hospital on Vasil Aprilov “15A str. The department performs the treatment of patients with chronic renal failure on hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis and other methods of non-renal blood purification.
Also the hospital performs a treatment of patients with acute renal failure and intoxications treated in other departments or other hospitals in the country. The department has 18 dialysis machine situated in Base 1 and two – situated in Base 2. Hemodialysis apparatus are “Fresenius” 4008 S, purchased 2010.
In 2011 the department obtainsinstallation for preparation of pure water for hemodialysis with reverse osmosis – AQUADEM B RO 1500, production of CRYSTAL CLEAR LTD. In 2011 in the department were carried 17 170 hemodialysis treatments to patients with chronic and acute renal failure. At the end of 2011 there were 100 patients on programmed hemodialysis and 7 patients on peritoneal dialysis.
Head of the hemodialysis department is Dr. Ethel Capon specializing in “internal medicine” and “Nephrology”. She also has a Master degree in “Health Management” by FOS to MU Plovdiv. She is member of the BMA, of Bulgarian society of nephrologyand dialysis professionals association. She is a member of ERA-EDTA (European Renal Association of dialysis and transplantation). Dr. Capon participates in scientific conferences and congresses in nephrology, dialysis and transplantation, in the training of Bulgarian and foreign medical students.
All medical specialists have attended courses in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis and with long experience.

The First Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital for Active Healthcare “Saint Sofia“
The hospital is founded on February 19, 1951 with the name “Tina Kirkova”. It is the first Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, build after September 9, 1944 in Bulgaria. In 1994 The Municipal Council of Sofia decides to rename the hospital and till than it carries the name “Saint Sofia“.
Thanks to the efforts of the whole team in the last ten years, First Gynecological Hospital has established itself as the only specialized hospital capable of meeting all medical needs of women and children – obstetrics, gynecology and oncology, infertility, mammology, emergency neonatology, genetic counseling , breast surgery and modern clinical laboratories, modern methods of examination and treatment.
For 58 years at the hospital were born 170 992 children – a big Bulgarian city.
